Professions (Guide)
Every week Time, the Healer brings An Earnest of Payment and rewards according to the Profession. Each Profession's weekly reward is listed at Profession Payments.
To select a new profession, you'll first need to quit your current one (if you have any), and you can do so via Resign from your Profession under Write Letters in you lodgings.
For Tier 1 professions you then have to wait for the desired Faction Cards to show up.
Tier 2 and 3 professions are selected from An Unsigned Message.

Advanced Professions and Lab / Parabola Content / Railway[edit source]
A significant amount of late-game content has been introduced to Fallen London in Spring 2020, mostly concentrated around three particular areas: the Parabola (and the Parabolan Base-Camp), the Railway and the Laboratory. Players with Tier 3 Professions have specific advantages, depending on the Profession, in pursuing particular activities in these places.
Namely:
Silverer[edit source]
- gets a +1 bonus to
Glasswork from their
Set of Cosmogone Spectacles. This skill helps to navigate in Parabola, making it easier to locate new areas and pursue monsters.
- can establish the Parabolan Base-Camp for 300
Memories of Light + 25 Echo worth of other items as opposed to 1001 for other players (a one-time saving equivalent to 350 Echoes)
- each consequent visit into Parabola costs the Silverer only 50
Drop of Prisoner's Honey, as opposed to 100 for other players (a saving of 1 Echo). Additionally, Silvers can travel directly between several locations without needing to stop by their Base-Camp first, saving in action in many cases.
Licentiate[edit source]
- gets a +1 bonus to
Kataleptic Toxicology from their
A List of Aliases, Writ in Gant. This skill helps to Disambiguate an Eolith in Lab and increases chances to heal in Parabola by eating
Parabolan Orange-apple. It also can be used in the Lab to generate 4 x
Kataleptic Toxicology units of
Laboratory Research when researching Toxicology experiments (such as the Watchful overcap experiments, or the
Formula for Perfumed Gunpowder).
- has an additional option during the mid-game when playing Chess at
The Chessboard.
- can Supply a skeleton of your own when selling in
the Bone Market, serving as a substitute for a
Headless Skeleton.
Correspondent[edit source]
- gets a +1 bonus to
Artisan of the Red Science from their
A Pot of Violant Ink. This skill can be used in the Lab to generate 4 x
Artisan of the Red Science units of
Laboratory Research when doing Red Science research like the
Mirthless Compendium of Statistical Observations or the
Impossible Theorem
- can establish a Laboratory for free, without paying 1
Justificande Coin, 1
Primaeval Hint and 1
Cellar of Wine as other players have to - a one-time saving equivalent to 75 Echo plus the actions required to obtain the Coin.
- furthermore, can expand their Laboratory from 2 to 3 workbenches for free, without paying 1
Judgements' Egg - an additional one-time saving of 62.5 Echo.
- in addition, an
Correspondent can get 30
Laboratory Research + 1 x
Equipment for Scientific Experimentation at the start of any Research project in the Lab, a notable early boost.
- has a unique option to upconvert Wild Word items at the the Statue at Station VII.
Monster-Hunter[edit source]
- gets a +1 bonus to
Monstrous Anatomy from their
A Notched Bone Harpoon. This skill helps to hunt denizens of Parabola, can be used in the Lab to generate 4 x
Monstrous Anatomy units of
Laboratory Research when researching the remains of their prey, and sees some use in
the Bone Market.
- gets an additional opportunity to wound their Parabolan quarry during the hunt, further simplifying it.
Crooked-Cross[edit source]
- gets a +1 bonus to
Mithridacy from their
A Crooked Cross. This skill helps to create
Corrective Historical Narrative and
Revisionist Historical Narrative in the
The Waswood in Parabola, the latter of which can be used in
the Bone Market. In addition, it can help to manage one's Student Complaints in the Laboratory, and is used extensively in
the Bone Market.
- has an additional option during the mid-game when playing Chess at
The Chessboard.
- can confuse the Railway board, making it easier to convince those who are vulnerable to obfuscation.
- can obtain
Rumours of the Upper River from A Familiar Bohemian Sculptress in
The Bone Market.
- can obtain
Esteem of the Guild more cheaply from Debate with the Nostalgic Landlady in Jericho: The Arborist's Hands. This makes Charter a barge to the Persephone almost self-funding, providing easy access to
Skull in Coral.
- can obtain
Mortification of a Great Power from Promulgate Doctrine in Burrow-Infra-Mump. Players with access to a good source of
Verse of Counter-Creed may find this preferable to Diving in the Magistracy.
Midnighter[edit source]
- gets a +1 bonus to
A Player of Chess from their
Shrine to Saint Joshua. This skill is required to play Chess on
The Chessboard.
- in addition, it's easier for the Midnighter to find
The Chessboard and they have access to several additional actions there. Playing Chess is unavoidable for the players pursuing
Ambition: Bag a Legend!. For other characters, it might be useful as a source of
Justificande Coins.
- can do some activities in the Cabinet Noir in Balmoral more efficiently.
At the moment the roles Correspondent, the Silverer and the Monster-Hunter seem to be more advantageous when exploring the new content. Other professions have less useful or more situational benefits.
